Goalball was originally designed for people with a visual impairment, and has since spread to sighted players as well. At national level both visually impaired and sighted players can compete in the sport. Players wear eyeshades and play on a court the size of a volleyball court. A team on court is made up of three players, who from their own half throw a ball containing bells past the opposing defensive line into a goal nine metres wide, and in turn block the opponent's attempts by lying along their side to cover as wide an area as possible. It is a fast, efficient ball game in which the ball can travel at over 70 km/h. A match is played in two 12-minute halves. Goalball is also a Paralympic sport, and one in which Finland has been successful.
